High school tennis season is in full swing and with the first couple weeks of action in the
books, the Texas Tennis Coaches Association has released its first set of state rankings for the 2014 season. The upper echelon of the polls are clad in familiar faces in both the Class 6A and 5A ranks, including several programs that appeared at the UIL state tournament last season. At the forefront of the rankings is Highland Park, whose elevation to the state's top classification hasn't altered the team's performance or expectations amid its 6A counterparts. After winning four consecutive state titles at the 4A level, the Scots enter 2014 as the top-ranked program in 6A. Reigning 5A champion New Braunfels checks in at No. 2 in the 6A poll, with state semifinalist Plano West, state runner-up Houston Memorial and Austin Westlake rounding out the top five. The Wolves will challenge top-ranked Highland Park on Oct. 4 in non-district action.
One rung below, all 5A programs are currently staring up at Grapevine, who is already
excelling in its new classification. The Mustangs check in at No. 1 in the 5A poll, followed by Alamo Heights, McKinney North, Texas Texarkana and A&M Consolidated.
