Making its first appearance at the UIL team tennis championships, Vandegrift fell just short of the Class 5A title, losing to Grapevine 10-6 Thursday in a final.
The Vipers (20-2) began singles play trailing 4-3 after Grapevine won two of three matches in both girls and boys doubles.
Vandegrift’s girls doubles squads had not lost in the Vipers’ previous 21 matches this season, posting a combined record of 63-0, but only their No. 1 team of Gabi Cusano and Meghan O’Malley won Thursday. In boys doubles, Vandegrift’s No. 3 team of Adrian Sherwood and Arvind Venkatesan recorded the only victory for the Vipers.
Vandegrift also picked up a point in mixed doubles as King Roy and Danielle Cuteri teamed to beat Grapevine’s duo of Miha Valencic and Madison Cleff, 6-2, 3-6 1-0 (5).
Grapevine (19-2) won all five of the boys singles matches that were completed at Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M campus while Vandegrift picked up three of the four points awarded in girls singles.
O’Malley defeated Cleff 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Tyler Duncum (No. 3) and Andi Stapper (No. 5) also posted straight-set victories for the Vipers.
On Wednesday, Vandegrift swept past A&M Consolidated 11-0 to reach the Class 5A final.
