Mustang Tennis Ready for a New Season

July 27, 2017

The Grapevine High School Mustang Tennis Team is led by second year head coach Clint Laukhuf.  A former sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, Coach Laukhuf has been a private and professional tennis coach since 2007 for various country clubs and tennis associations in North Texas.

As a player, Coach Laukhuf played at the high school, collegiate and professional level. Clint played high school tennis at nearby Euless Trinity and then at the University of Texas at Dallas.  He has been a member of the United States Tennis Association since 2005 and has held the national ranking of #32 in Men’s 30 and over singles and the Texas sectional ranking of #1 in Men’s 30 and over doubles.  He joined GHS in July 2016.

Ryan Gillen, formerly head tennis coach at Wichita Falls Rider, coached the 2015-2016 season. He’s now moved on to Vernon.  Coach Angel Martinez retired from Grapevine High School in 2014 and is now coaching the women's tennis team at Texas Wesleyan.  Both won State Championships at GHS in Team Tennis.

The Mustang Varsity tennis team has been named District Champions 15 times:

The 2014 & 2015 teams were ranked #1 in the State from pre-season to post-season. With four trips to the State Tournament, Grapevine ranks 6th on the list of All Time Tournament Appearances among 5A teams.

The Mixed Doubles team of Alex Hanno and Haley Holt were State Semi-finalists in Spring of 2008. Grapevine qualified 3 teams in doubles play for the 2015 State Tournament: Boys' Doubles, Alex Joseph and Miha Valencic; Girls' Doubles, Isabel Bergman and Madison Cleff; and Mixed Doubles, Octavia Malin and Keenan Rico. The teams of Joseph and Valencic and Malin and Rico went on to win the State Championship.

The Junior Varsity tennis team has been named the undefeated District Champions in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Over the years, the program has received generous donations including the Tennis Field House with locker rooms, concession area, public restrooms, and team room in 2008. During the summer of 2009, on-court lighting was installed to the 12 court facility and the courts were resurfaced by the school district. With 12 courts, the GHS Tennis Facility is one of the premier public school tennis facilities in the area.

The upcoming season looks to expand upon Grapevine’s rich history.  Coach Laukhuf is expecting more than 50 players to compete for varsity during tryouts which will be held the first week of August.
