Varsity Tryouts set for 2018-2019

March 21, 2018

Tryouts for the 2018-2019 Tennis Team will be the week of July 30th through August 3rd.  They'll start at 8:00am each day and will include warmups, matches, conditioning drills and more.  Come prepared to compete!

Here's some info on the program.  Stay tuned for more details.

COACH’S VISION: create a positive, high energy team, where players have fun while progressing toward individual goals.

Mustang Tennis is a no-cut, year round (fall/spring semester) program. It fulfills the high school PE requirement.

Experience: Very little tennis experience is needed in order to participate in the tennis program. However, in order to grow and develop as a complete player participation in an after school program, private lessons, and competing in USTA tournaments are highly recommended.

Tryouts/Challenge Matches: Tryouts will start on July 30th, consist of matches to set  the challenge ladder, and last for several days. Throughout the school year there will be limited opportunities to move up  the ladder. Based on the results of tryouts the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will be determined. The Varsity team will consist of 8-11 boys and girls, JV 1 will consist of 8 boys and girls. JV 2 is for everyone else and will not get the opportunity to challenge JV 1 until after the Fall season.

Competition: The Fall is the team season top 8 boys and girls on Varsity and JV compete. The entire Varsity is expected to be at every match. The matches take place after school. The Spring is the individual season and tournaments last all day during the school day. For Varsity there will be a few Friday and Saturday tournaments. During the spring everyone will have the opportunity to play several tournaments.

Practice: Practices consist of cooperative consistency drills and point play, footwork drills, conditioning, and lifting weights (mainly between the seasons and during inclement weather days).

Equipment: Each player is responsible for their own equipment: racquet, shoes, and practice clothes. Match uniforms will be purchased through the booster club.

Summer program: There will be summer programming that focuses on developing skills for incoming freshmen and middle school players. All players are encouraged to participate and lead the camps. When dates are set they will be posted on the GHS tennis booster website and on twitter.
