The fall Team Tennis season is nearing its end – at least the regular season part. Though we lost a close match to end the district competition, Grapevine will be heading into the playoffs – as they have every year since 2000. Twenty consecutive playoff appearances points to a strong Mustang tradition we can all be proud of. Sure, we’d like to be going as the District Champion. But we still have the opportunity to achieve our goals. We can reach Regionals for the 29th time in school history. And with a super effort and a break here and there, maybe get past Regionals and go on to the State Tournament for the 5th time.
It’s been a good season with lots of growth and improvement by every member of the team. We have learned from our losses.
As we prepare for the playoffs, we’ll see some familiar faces. Only 6 teams from Region I have appeared at State since 2010. Grapevine, Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Wichita Falls Rider and Abilene Wylie have made it at least once with only Grapevine and Rider making repeat appearances. And they’ll all be in the playoffs this year.
This is also the time of the year when the Texas Tennis Coaches’ Association releases it’s team rankings. Always interesting to look at – especially when we’re ranked. So we thought it would be fun to come up with our own rankings. And next week we can see how close we came. Or how close the coaches come to agreeing with us.
So here are our rankings for Region I, based on UTR team ratings as well as head to head competition.
